PRIMARY school teachers in Australia work longer than teachers anywhere else in the Western world, on duty almost 200 hours more every year than the OECD average.

According to a new study jointly conducted by UNESCO and the International Labour Office, the statutory number of teaching hours in Australian primary schools is 996, compared with 644 in Denmark and 892 in France. The average for OECD countries is 801 hours.

In high schools, only the US asks more of its teachers than Australia, with 964 hours statutory teaching hours in junior high school, compared with 955 hours in Australia; and 943 hours for senior high school teachers, compared with 941 hours in Australia. The OECD average is 716 hours for junior high school and 662 hours for senior high school.

The report, A Statistical Profile of the Teaching Profession, released today, warns population growth and a decline in working conditions are causing a worldwide teacher shortage.

The study finds the number of school-aged children has outpaced the growth of the teacher workforce.

Low salaries and poor work conditions discourage new recruits.

In developing countries there are up to 100 students to a teacher.

In developed countries, the report finds the teaching workforce is ageing and governments are struggling to attract young people to the profession. In Germany and Sweden more than 70 per cent of primary school teachers are over 40.

In Australia, figures estimate the average age of a teacher is mid to late 40s. Weekend newspapers routinely carry advertisements for teachers from the US, Britain and New Zealand. Most states have aggressive teacher recruitment drives and state governments advertise interstate.
