In 1955, Ray Kroc visited a small restaurant in California. The
restaurant was built next to the road, so customers could drive up to the
restaurant and drive away easily. The restaurant was owned and operated by the
McDonald brothers, Dick and "Mac".
The McDonald brothers had developed a new idea for their restaurant. The
brothers called their idea a "drive-in" restaurant, and customers
could order food from their cars.
The restaurant also cut down on the number of choices on the menu, so the
cooks could make the food very quickly. The restaurant specialized in making
hamburgers, French fries, and chocolate shakes.
Ray Kroc recognized the potential of the McDonald brothers' restaurant,
and he offered to buy the rights to the two brothers' idea. Mr. Kroc wanted to
open his own restaurants, and he wanted to use the idea of a drive-in
restaurant. He also wanted to use the brothers' family name. The two brothers
agreed, and the McDonald's restaurant chain was born.
At this point, McDonald's is now the world's largest restaurant
corporation. In the United States, there are more than 5,000 McDonald's
restaurants. The McDonald's chain also operates restaurants in 60 other
countries. In 1992, McDonald's made more than $16 billion from its restaurants
around the world.
The largest McDonald's restaurant is located in Beijing, China. All told,
this restaurant has 1,000 employees. Also , up to 700 customers can sit and eat
in this restaurant at one time.
56. Why was the first McDonald's restaurant different from other
restaurants?
A. It was next to the
road.

could order from their cars. D.
The restaurant served hamburgers.

Try this memory test. Mix up the cards in a deck of playing cards. Now
look at the top seven cards. Can you remember these cards in the correct order
that you saw them after looking at the cards only once?
Dominic O'Brien can. In fact, he memorized the order of more than 2,000
cards after looking at them only once! In 1993, Mr. O'Brien memorized the order
of 40 decks of cards after the
cards were mixed up by looking at all of the cards one time. After he got
through looking at the cards, Mr. O'Brien recited all 2,000 of them in the
correct order on national television in England. He only made one mistake.
Mr. O'Brien also held the record for memorizing one deck of cards in only
56 seconds until Tom Groves broke the record in 1994. Mr. Groves, who is also
from England, memorized one deck of cards after the cards had been mixed up in
42 seconds. Keep in mind that there are 52 cards in a deck. He recited the order
of the cards with no mistakes.
Not everyone tries to prove their memory skills by reciting cards. Some
people memorize words or numbers. Hideaki Tomoyori of Japan wanted to prove that
his memory was the best in the world by reciting pi. Pi is a mathematical
constant often used in science which is almost equal to 3.14159. This number
never repeats itself or ends.
Mr. Tomoyori wanted to memorize more of pi than any other person in the
world. He thought that he would go down in history as the man with the best
memory when, on March 9--10, 1987, he recited pi to 40,000 places. It took the
55-year-old man more than 12 hours to recite the numbers, but he did it without
making a mistake!
Then, eight years later, a 21-year-old man who was also from Japan beat
Mr. Tomoyori's record. Hiroyuki Goto recited pi to 42,195 places at the NHK
television station in Tokyo, Japan on February 18,1995.
59. What did Mr. Groves do better than Mr. O'Brien ?
A. He memorized more
cards.
B. He memorized cards faster.
C.He
made fewer mistakes than Mr. O'Brien. D.
He memorized pi.
60. What is true about the number pi ?
A. It is a constant.
B. It is used in science.
C. It never repeats
itself.
D. all of the above.
61. What is the best tittle of the passage?
A. Memorizing Cards.

Finland is perhaps the most
beautiful and mysterious of the countries of northern Europe. Two-thirds of its
surface is covered with thick forests and among them lies lakes, connected with
rivers and canals. The northern part of this country is inside the Arctic
Circle, where almost no trees can grow because of its cold weather and the
people use their deer for transport, clothing and food.
The Finnish history
began in the Middle Ages. In about 1155, Finland was conquered by its western
neighboring Sweden. After a period of rule by Denmark in the 14 th
century, the Swedes won back independence and power in 1532 under their brave
king. During the Napoleonic Wars (1814--1818) Finland was passed finally from
Sweden to Russia. The opportunity came in 1917, when the Russian Revolution
brought foreign rule of Finland to an end. Shortly after Soviet Russia made
peace with Germany, 1919 saw the founding of the Finnish Republic.
The years between the First and Second World Wars were years of progress
and growing development. Finland has no coal or oil, and the nation's wealth
lies in the timber from its forests, which supplies material for paper and
furniture making , and in the electric power from its water .

The easy way out isn't always easiest. I learned that lesson when I
decided to treat Doug, my husband of one month, to a special meal. I glanced
through my cookbook and chose a menu which included homemade bread. Knowing the
bread would take time. I started on it as soon as Doug left for work. As I was
not experienced in cooking, I thought if a dozen was good, two dozen would be
better, so I doubled everything. As Doug loved oranges, I also opened a can of
orange and poured it all into the bowl. Soon there was a sticky dough covered
with ugly yellowish marks. Realizing I had been defeated, I put the dough in the
rubbish bin outside so I wouldn't have to face Doug laughing at my work. I went
on preparing the rest of the meal, and , when Doug got home, we sat down to
Cornish chicken with rice. He tried to enjoy the meal but seemed disturbed.
Twice he got up and went out outside, saying he thought he heard a noise. The
third time he left , I went to the window to see what he was doing . Looking
out, I saw Doug standing about three feet from the rubbish bin, holding the lid
up with a stick and looking into the container. When I came out of the house, he
dropped the stick and explained that there was something alive in our rubbish
bin. Picking up the stick again, he held the lid up enough for me to see.
I felt cold. But I stepped closer and looked harder. Without doubt it was my
work. The hot sun had caused the dough to double in size and the fermenting
yeast (酵母) made the surface shake and sigh as though it were breathing. It looked
like some unknown being from outer space. I could see why Doug was so shaken. I
had to admit what the 'living thing' was and why it was there. I don't know who
was more embarrassed(尴尬)
by the whole thing---- Doug or me.
